THE CURE: Chapter Seven-Epilogue
Riddick set Sam
down and told her to wait for him in the escape pod. Sam limped into the
corridor and entered the pod. She checked its thrusters, and started the
engines. Then she brought up the computer screen.
“Open
Self Destruct File”, Sam said. Still slightly out of breath.
“Voice
Coding checks. Yes Sam”, the computer answered back.
“Code
52043. Set silent timer for 2 minutes.”
“Ship
will self destruct in 2 minutes.”
“Hurry Riddick.” Sam could hear the sounds of the two of them being
thrown into the walls of the ship, then a shot. She heard the Corridor door
open, then the pod door, it was Riddick.
“Lets
get out of here.”, Riddick said as he buckled in. Sam opened the bay doors and
took off.
Sam
felt the pod shutter from the explosion; the Lunar had just blown up.
“Damn
it! I liked that ship too!”, Sam banged her hand on the control panel, as she
looked thru the rear censors as the Lunar continued to explode in huge
shuttering bursts. They had done it. They had the CD and they were on their way
back to the base.
When
Sam and Riddick arrived back at THE CURE. They were greeted by hundreds of
people applauding and patting them on the backs, including a med staff that was
on stand-by. Sam limped her way thru the crowd. The medics quickly lifted her up
and placed her on a gurney. They were about to roll her into the infirmary when
she stopped them. She rolled onto her side and pulled the research CD from her
back pocket, and handed it to Riddick.
“You
know what to do.”, said Sam as they took her back thru the infirmary doors.
Sam had been in bed for two weeks after they’d come back from the
mission. She was to weak to get up and walk around. Jackie had been to visit her
quite often; doing much better since the new treatments. Finally they were close
to a cure. That CD had had the missing pieces of the puzzle, it was only a short
amount of time before they found a permanent cure. Riddick had said good-bye to
the two of them before he left for the Fane Quadrant; said he had business to
attend to. Jackie and Sam didn’t ask. Sam and Jackie were leaving the following
day on a trip to the Mars Quadrant to visit Sam’s family. Jackie was looking
forward to it, and so was Sam.
The End (or is it?)
